In mid-December, PHPBB Group announced the release of PHPBB 3.0 Gold with the following message:
Quote:
Today we begin a new chapter in the history of phpBB. After five years, over 200,000 lines of new and altered code, and many a long night phpBB Group is very proud to announce the release of phpBB3 "Olympus".
phpBB has changed considerably since work on its second major release began. People have come and gone but this day would not have been reached without the hard work and dedication of all our group members, past and present. The phpBB community, all of you, also deserve a large pat on the back for continuing to support this project. Whether it be through writing mods, creating new themes, spreading the word or simply using phpBB to build new communities, our thanks to you too.
So again we say with great pride and many thanks to all those who've helped us reach this point - enjoy phpBB3.
Although released over 6 weeks ago, FreeForums has yet to update all of their forums with the version of PHPBB, and there is still no target date. Hopefully, you can check back in the next few weeks for some EXCITING AND ENTHRALLING new forum code (the forum will run more efficiently), and perhaps even a snazzy new template!

Eepers. I really don't like bubble bursting. Especially when I don't fully know what I'm talking about.
But in most situations, most free forum folk don't ever upgrade. Since that costs them extra moolah and would cause compatibility issues in some cases. I mean, Forumer is still running IPB 1.3. And they don't seem like they plan on upgrading to v2 any time soon.
Then again, maybe FreeForums is more eager? Iunno. I have no right to be saying anything. Just thought I'd... put it out there ^^;

Unless something is seriously wrong, my impression is that FreeForums is different. For one thing, they're much bigger and more efficient than all the other competition. They've also made a few announcements saying that they're working on the upgrade, so...
They're definitely the most trustworthy free forum host out there.
Besides, this forum is running just fine without the upgrade.
Yeah, I'm not familiar with the terrain - mainly because I usually go for IPB over phpBB since the free versions of phpBB typically feel more limited to me =/ Glad to hear we ish gonna be teh upgradez0rz, though
